School Link - 19 July 2023
From the Principal
Thank you all for the warm welcome to Allora P-10 State School.
I am very proud to be the Principal of this school. I would like to acknowledge the work of those educators who have gone before me, the proud history of the school and its standing in the community, and am looking forward to working with you all to ensure this is continued while also embedding the Department's priorities of Equity and Excellence focusing on educational achievement, wellbeing and engagement and a culture of inclusion.
I have had a busy start to the term getting to know the processes and procedures of the day to day running of the school and cannot thank the staff enough for their willingness to answer my many questions! Each staff member has been asked to make time with me to talk about their journey to this school, what they love about their job and also what they want for the school in the future. I will be be asking these questions of the P&C members on Thursday night at the P&C meeting (see you all in the library at 7pm) and will be giving the students a chance to contribute with a student forum. This feedback will help me to shape the agenda of the school moving forward. If you cannot make it to the P&C meeting, parents are most welcome to contact me to chat about what they might want for the school in the future.
Another way families can provide feedback is through the School Opinion Survey. An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 17 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2023. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone. Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at the school. School computers/tablets will be available upon request. Please see the ladies in the office.
I would like to wish our competitors at the Central Downs Athletics the very best. I look forward to watching them compete and cheering on our sports stars on Wednesday 19th and Friday 21st July here at Allora State School.
All the best for the upcoming fortnight.

Calendar of Events
Student of the Week
The following students are awarded certificates for demonstrating our school motto, “Always our Best”. Congratulations students!
Every Day Counts
“Every Day Counts” for every student. Under Queensland law, you must make sure your child of school age is enrolled and attends school all day, every school day unless they have a reasonable excuse. Illness, doing work experience, competing in a school sporting event or going on a school excursion are reasonable excuses for being absent from school. Avoid keeping your child away from school for birthdays, shopping, visiting family and friends, if they sleep in, looking after other children, minor check ups or care such as haircuts. Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays.
You are reminded that it is a legal requirement to have all student absences explained (an explanation – not a message that “they are away today”).
Please use one of the following methods, recording the student’s name and reason for absence:
- SMS anytime to 0429 316 194 (preferred);
- reply to the SMS sent out each morning a student is absent;
- call student absence line 4666 7266; or
- phone the school office.
We would appreciate your help in having all student absences explained.
Class Dojo or emails are NOT to be used to advise of student absences. All unexplained absences are followed up with a formal letter which must be completed, signed and returned to the school.
Tuckshop
A new tuckshop menu was included in the last newsletter. Please ensure you are using this menu and prices from now on. The menu is also available on the school's website.
HELP!! As you can see from the roster below, we are very, very short on volunteers. Please consider volunteering some time to help out at the tuckshop.
We thank those who already volunteer their time at Tuckshop. Without support from our wonderful volunteers, we would struggle to run. If there are any problems or you are unable to volunteer on your rostered day, please let Serena know with an SMS or phone call before school. Thank you.

A Note from the Library
Welcome back to Term 3. Borrowing will continue as normal and student borrowing days are as follows:
- Magnificent Monday Year 1, Year 4 and Year 6
- Tranquil Tuesday Year 5
- Wacky Wednesday Prep
- Thoughtful Thursday Year 2 and Year 3
Please make sure your child has a library bag when borrowing - this can be something as simple as a pillowcase or a recyclable bag.
Other exciting news is that Book Week is coming! To celebrate Book Week 2023 we will be having a dress-up day on Wednesday 23 August. The theme for this year is “Read, Grow, Inspire”. Students are asked to come in theme or dress up as their favourite book character. Please note it is not a free dress day. Parents, something simple is often the best. We do not expect you to purchase an expensive costume. We will have a quick parade on the day and students who dress up could win a voucher from Book Club if their name is drawn out of the box. This is open to all students from Prep to Year 10. I look forward to seeing some great costumes.
Have a great week.

National Pyjama Day and Disco
Friday 4 August is "wear your pyjamas to school day" with a gold coin donation going towards the National Pyjama Day initiative. Year 10 students are also holding a pyjama-themed disco on the Friday night.
